AIRCRAFT
UH-1H "Huey" helicopter

The "Huey" multi-role utility and transport helicopter is in service with more nations and has been produced in greater numbers than any other military aircraft since World War II.  Many models carry armament and generally served with distinction in Vietnam.

U-Utility (modified mission)  H-Helicopter (basic mission) 1-Design number H-Series symbol

Manufactured by Bell Helicopter, the Huey carries a crew of 4 (pilot, co-pilot (when assigned), crew chief (when assigned), and mission equipment operator (when assigned), but requires only a crew of 1 to fly.

It is powered by a T53-L-13 (1400 hp but torque limited by the transmission to 1100 hp at 6600 rpm).  The transmission is mounted forward of the engine and coupled to the power turbine shaft at the cool end of the engine by the main driveshaft.  The transmission is basically a reduction gearbox used to transmit engine power at a reduced rpm to the rotor system.

AH-1 "Cobra" helicopter

The Bell 209 Huey cobra is the two-seat combat version of the "Huey" series and first entered service in June 1967.  With a crew of two seated in tandem, the gunner in front and the pilot behind him, the Cobra has a fuselage only three feet and two inches wide, making it a more difficult target to hit from the ground that were the armed versions of the UH-1.  With a formidable variety of armament, progressively strengthened over the years, the Cobra has developed into one of this country's major antitank systems, armed with the TOW missile.
